I have wanted to dive the Yukon ever since Randy returned from his trip to see the sinking of the ship. He was unable to dive the ship at that time and has wanted to dive it since then also, probably more than I. We
were lucky to meet (and become friends with) another diver/uw photographer
that lives in San Diego, who volunteered to take us out in his boat to
dive the Yukon. He also gave us some tips on the layout of the ship and
what we might see. ![]() The visibility wasn't great until about 60-70 feet down where it opened up to about 50 feet. As you descend there is nothing but green water around you. Then you see a huge dark shape looming beneath you. It's the Yukon! There is already lots of growth on the ship including Metridian Anemones, both white and orange. I had never seen an orange Metridian before and was very surprised. Plenty of fish around the wreck including a large Ling Cod resting in the same place both days. My first trip to Catalina Island was in May 2001. We rented a house with some friends and arranged 3 days of diving on the King Neptune. Although I had seen many photographs of Garibaldi fish, I was still very surprised by how orange they really are! And how aggressive! The visibility was excellent and I was able to get some wide-angle shots of the kelp forest rising 60+ feet off the bottom.
My second trip was an Optiquatics trip to the Channel Islands. What fun to go on the Peace with all the other passengers also being underwater photographers. Having staff from Backscatter on board made the trip an educational one also. One of the highlights of the trip was seeing the Giant Sea Bass at Italian Gardens. They are huge!
